Welcome to Our Orthodox Christian Bookshelf!

If you've managed to discover us in this hidden little part of the web, it's very likely that you've already explored the various websites for Orthodox Christian home educators with curriculum resources.  We note that our purpose is not to create another list with links to these various websites, nor are we an Orthodox Christian curriculum provider.  Our purpose is merely to provide a non-exhaustive list of living books and other resources which we have found invaluable in "Orthodox-Christianizing" a literature-rich (non-Orthodox) "Christian world-view" homeschool curriculum.

Furthermore, our list is limited to those resources which are generally accepted as being Orthodox Christian.  We have therefore intentionally not included any non-Orthodox Christian living books or resources which might still be considered "ok" ... but for us as Orthodox Christians, C.S Lewis and JRR Tolkein novels are not ok for children.  Nor is "classical education" ok for the immature mind, including studying Shakespeare, Ancient Greek Mythology or philosophical writings including those of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and the like (all of which greatly increase the risk of ultimately leading the immature mind away from Orthodox Christianity and toward heresy, secularisation and atheism, as witnessed during the dark period of church history of Scholasticism and the later period of "Enlightenment").

"Orthodox-Christianizing" a literature-rich home-school curriculum has been particularly challenging with respect to the study of world history.  This is because most English-language school-age "Christian biblical world-view" history living books are written from Reformed Protestant, Evangelical or Papal Protestant (Catholic) viewpoints, and are therefore peppered with heretical content.  This is the case even in many instances where resources are marketed as "Orthodox Christian" resources.

Categories of Resources

We have split the resources into the following four categories (although there is overlap and many of the living books could fit into multiple categories - and all of them could fit into the first!):

1. Family Spiritual & Devotional Resources

2. Orthodox Christian World-View History & Politics Resources (Economics, Geography & Nature Study also flagged where relevant)

3. Orthodox Christian World-View Historical Fiction

4. Byzantine Chanting & Iconography Appreciation

We are yet to find science living book resources (such as astronomy, anatomy, biology, etc) written by an Orthodox Christian writer (there are resources written from a "Christian world-view", but are not Orthodox Christian world-view).  We would love to hear from you if you are able to recommend any - please contact us at info@orthodoxhomeschool.au.

To see inside many of our recommended resources, to find out about why we recommend them, and how we have used them, FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM: @orthodoxiseyourhomeschool.

Some Final Comments

We note that we receive no financial benefit from listing resources or stockists on our page.

Our apologies to any Orthodox Christian authors who have produced beautiful and invaluable books, whom we are yet to discover or use and therefore have not included hereAs we discover more relevant Orthodox Christian resources, we will update our page.

If you have any queries or comments, please email us at: info@orthodoxhomeschool.au.

Lastly, please pray for us as we pray that through the intercessions of Saint Kosmas Aitolos and of the Holy Three Hierarchs - Saints Basil the Great, John Chrysostom and Gregory the Theologian, our Holy Triune God blesses our Orthodox Christian homeschools, and that you find these resources as valuable as we have in home-educating and raising children, immersed in our Orthodox Christian faith.

PS:  As Orthodox Christian home educators, we may sometimes worry (or have outsiders casting doubts in our minds) that our children might be "missing out" on socialisation as a result of not attending mainstream school.  Below is a link to a youtube clip with wise words on the topic, "Will Homeschooling Hinder My Child's Socialization?", by an Orthodox Christian Priest, Fr Peter Heers, who, together with his wife, have homeschooled their five children:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cO8NMGzeXw

ANTICHRIST: THE FULFILLMENT OF GLOBALIZATION
[HIGH SCHOOL WORLD HISTORY, GLOBAL POLITICS & GLOBAL ECONOMICS]
Author:  G.M. Davis PhD
Publisher:  Uncut Mountain Press

From economics, to politics, to religion, globalization has shown itself the most significant historical phenomenon of our time. No area of life or culture has gone untouched by the seemingly relentless global centralization of power. Globalization promises an "end" to history when all of the peoples of the world will be united in a single civilization of global reach. But what is the ultimate meaning of globalization? What would an "end" to history look like? Where does the process ultimately lead? Contrary to much contemporary thought, the answer is not to be found in social science text books or political editorials. It is only from a perspective outside of history that the ultimate meaning of history may be found. In this book, G. M. Davis, PhD, provides a powerful analysis of the most significant events of our time from the only perspective capable of making sense of them: the eternal perspective, the timeless wisdom of the Orthodox Christian Church, in which the Alpha and Omega of history have been revealed and received. For twenty centuries, the Church has forewarned her children of the end of history, when the world will be united by a great deception, of a time when mankind will follow a world leader of unprecedented powers and charisma, a man of apparent superhuman abilities who will fulfill all of the world's most profound, but misguided, hopes and desires: it will be the reign of Antichrist, the fulfillment of globalization.  [379 pages]

THE ROMANOV ROYAL MARTYRS: WHAT SILENCE COULD NOT CONCEAL  [20TH CENTURY HISTORY BOLSHEVIKS/COMMUNISM]
Publisher:  St John the Forerunner Monastery of Mesa Potamos

This book draws on letters, testimonies, diaries, memoirs, and other texts never before published in English to present a unique biography of Tsar Nicolas II and his family. It brings to light a multitude of unknown and unrevealed facts, aspects and elements of history, which evince that many truths in regard to the life and martyrdom of the Royal Martyrs remain silenced or distorted to this day. It presents unvarnished factually sourced events, deriving all its material stringently from primary sources, which allow no grounds for questioning their legitimacy, gravity, and validity. Thus, many major historical events, such as the 1905 revolution and Bloody Sunday, Russia's involvement in World War I, the February coup d'etat of 1917 and the events relating to Nicolas' II abdication, are set in their true proportions and are presented through a proper perspective. Readers may be surprised by the facts surrounding these historical events since up to now these events have generally been presented inaccurately.  [512 pages]

DIAMONDS ON THE BOSPHORUS [5TH CENTURY AD]
Author:  Aliki Kafetzopoulou
Publisher: St Herman Press

Constantinople in AD 400 is the greatest city of its era: the throne of the Roman Empire with marble streets and gold adorned churches. But not all is right in the imperial capital: the empress Eudoxia has begun a persecution of the city's great pastor and preacher, St. John Chrysostom.  This is a story of the choice made by Christians throughout the centuries: to follow the path of Christ or the path of worldly glory. Nicephorus and his twin sister, Juliana, have dwelt their entire lives in the shadow of Constantinople on the shores of the Bosphorus. As children of a pious fisherman, they have been raised in Christian virtues, devoting themselves to serving others. Their greatest joy is to hear the divine words of the righteous bishop St. John Chrysostom. Nicephorus and Juliana have their lives turned upside-down with the revelation of their true identities. Suddenly, the paths of these simple fishers have become intertwined with intrigue in the imperial court and the persecutions raised against St. John.

Edmund is just an ordinary fisherman's son from the island of Lindisfarne, whose one great talent and joy is running as a messanger for his bishop.  But when Viking invadors threaten the holy island and its great treasure, the relics of St Cuthbert, Edmund's life changes forever.  Along with his whole village, he must accompany their beloved saint on a perilous pilgrimage that will carry him across England, through adventure, heartbreak, miraculous deliverance, and love, all the way to manhood.  Bearing the Saint brings to life the late 9th century in Northumbria, a turbulent period of invasion and conquest that concluded with an uneasy peace between Saxon and Dane.  [264 pages]
